Editorial Policy
Afrym exists to tell accurate, respectful and engaging stories about African cultures. These are the standards we hold ourselves to.
Original work
Everything we publish is written for Afrym. We do not copy articles from other sites, and we do not publish automatically generated or "spun" content. When we quote someone, we keep quotes short, attribute them, and link to the source where possible.
Research and sources
We use books, peer-reviewed research, museum and archive collections, official heritage organisations (such as UNESCO and national museums), reputable journalism, and first-hand accounts from people within a community. Where historians disagree, or where a story is a legend rather than documented history, we say so.
Respect and specificity
Africa has thousands of peoples and languages. We name the specific community, region and time behind a tradition. We avoid stereotypes, exoticising language and treating living cultures as relics of the past. Sacred or restricted knowledge is not ours to publish, and we leave it out.
Images
We only use images we created, have licensed, or that are in the public domain or under a licence that allows reuse, with credit given as required.
Corrections
When we get something wrong, we fix it promptly. Significant corrections are noted at the end of the article with the date of the change. Report an error through our Contact page.
Independence
Advertising helps fund the site, but advertisers have no say over our content. If we ever publish sponsored content or use affiliate links, it will be clearly labelled.
